• Medications: Individuals who are using prescription drugs should seek medical advice for possible changes in the drug effect when the body is exposed to elevated body temperature, i.e., antihistamines may cause the body to be more prone to heat stroke.
  • The Elderly: The ability to maintain core body temperature decreases with age primarily due to circulatory conditions and decreased sweat gland function.
  • Cardiovascular Conditions: Individuals with cardiovascular conditions, congestive heart failure, impaired coronary circulation should exercise caution when exposed to prolonged heat.
  • Alcohol / Alcohol Abuse: Alcohol intoxication decreases a person’s ability to judge the body’s reaction to high heat. Alcohol also increases the heart rate, which may be further increased by heat stress.
  • Conditions Associated with a Reduced Ability to Sweat/Perspire: Conditions that are associated with impaired sweating can predispose individuals to heat rash or to a lesser extent, heat stroke.
  • Hemophiliacs / Prone to Bleeding: The use of sauna/spa should be avoided by anyone who is predisposed to bleeding.
  • Fever: An individual who has a fever should not use a sauna/spa until the fever subsides.
  • Pregnancy: Pregnant women should consult a physician before using a sauna/spa. Excessive body temperatures have a potential for causing fetal damage during the early days of pregnancy.
  • Joint Injury: Injured joints should not be heated for the first 48 hours after an injury or until the swollen symptoms subside. Joints that are chronically hot and swollen may respond poorly to vigorous heating of any kind.
  • Pacemaker / Defibrillator: Certain conditions of the sauna/spa facilities exposed to high temperature can interrupt the pacing and inhibit the output of pacemakers. Please discuss with your doctor the possible risks this may cause.
